Encuentro de Chicas Latinas de las Girl Scouts

Encuentro de Chicas Latinas de las Girl Scouts is open to Latina Girls, ages 11-17, who demonstrate leadership skills inside and outside of the classroom.  The program is open to all middle and high school age girls in the metro area who are not currently Girl Scouts.  The conference is a convening of Latina youth leaders designed to inspire them to recognize their own abilities and become active in their schools and in their communities.

The three-day program will include challenging activities for the girls and influential guest speakers from the Latina community. This year girls will experience a camping experience as well as tour James Madison University.

GSCNC is looking for Girl Scout teens to volunteer as Program Aides during the conference.  This is a great way to earn international hours and leadership hours.  If you are interested, please contact Veronica Rosales-Sanchez at vrosales-sanchez@gscnc.org.

It doesn't cost anything, just a couple of minutes of your time to fill out the form at http://www.gscnc.org/files/pdf/leader/leaderdevpin.pdf. Fill it out and bring it to the March or April SU Mtg for approval and signature from either Cyndie, Kristy or Monique. You’ll receive it on Recognitions Night.

Coordinate a HERO PACK program for Operation: Military Kids (OMK)

The OMK organization assists children whose family is in the military, especially those with deployed parents. Girl Scouts provides them with information about scouting and how they can join us. OMK provides the Girl Scouts with service project ideas and programs.

Hero Packs are backpacks that are filled with a handwritten note from a peer thanking them for their service, fun items such as a stuffed animal or frisbee, and a way for the kid to stay in contact with their deployed parent such as disposable camera, stationary, a photo album or a journal.

Hero Packs are a tangible expression of support for military families from their communities. Hero Packs are filled by non-military youth and community organizations with mementos and items designed to help keep military kids connected with their deployed parent. They are a way to hand-deliver a salute to military children and youth for their strength and sacrifices while parents are deployed.

If your troop is interested in running a Hero Pack Program, please contact Elyse Roland, Field Director, at eroland@gscnc.org. A special program patch (to be worn on the back of the vest or sash) can be designed by the troop and ordered with the OMK / Hero pack design if the troop is interested. For more information on OMK and the Hero Pack Program, please visit: http://www.operationmilitarykids.org/public/statePOCHome.aspx?state=Virginia

Scouts Celebrate Girl Scout Sunday

Over 20 scouts from several SUs celebrated Girl Scouts Sunday at United Christian Parish on March 11. Girls lived out their promise “…to serve God and my Country” by serving as liturgists, acolytes, ushers, greeters and even as a solo vocalist! Between services parishioners had an opportunity to make cards for soldiers and to donate Cookies 4 Soldiers as mission outreach to those military serving overseas. All enjoyed a celebration cake, GS cookies and 6 historical displays. Our SU had scouts participating from troops 415, 525, 5692 and 5696.

THANK YOU to Ambassador Troop 878!

A big Thank You goes to Ambassador Troop 878 for coordinating the Association Cosmic Bowling event for 8th-12th grade scouts. Due to their efforts, teens from the Service Units in our Association had a great time!

Juliette Low World Friendship Fund – Your troop collections can be given to Monique Duke, SU Money Manager, to send to the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund.

What are Brownie Wings?

Brownie Girl Scout Wings show that a girl has completed her years as a Brownie. She is ready to "fly up" to Junior Girl Scouting. This is a tradition that goes back to when Brownie Girl Scout leaders were called Brown Owls. The wings are worn on the Junior sash or vest. The Brownie Wings are worn on the Girls 11-17 vest or sash if they have been a Brownie. The Brownie Girl Scout Wings are often given at year-end award ceremonies.

What is Bridging?

Bridging is when a girl transitions to the next level of scouting. This is often marked by a special fly-up or bridging ceremony or celebration  http://www.girlscouts.org/program/basics/traditions/ceremonies/bridging.asp

All girls "fly-up" to the next level, but bridging awards are earned recognitions.
Help your girls learn about the next program level and share with younger scouts about their current level so they can complete the bridging requirements. Bridging awards are sometimes referenced as the bridging rainbow since they are multicolored shapes. Scouts can earn a bridging award when they bridge from Daisy to Brownie and on up through “bridge to Adult” by the Ambassadors.

Find the requirements for bridging at each level in the Girls guide to Girl Scouting. You can also find them online at http://www.gscnc.org/bridging_requirements.html

Girls Guide to Girl Scouting

Is your troop moving to a new level next year? Consider suggesting your girls buy their handbook/badgebook this spring, perhaps even with their cookie sale profits. The Girls Guide to Girl Scouting is 25% off through May at our local GS Mini-shop in Centreville and the Main Shop in DC.

Basic Girl Scout Ceremonies – Come to the SU meeting on 3/19 and learn about ceremonies from our guest speaker, Sandy Alexander. Welcome our newest leaders who will also be invested. GSUSA provides some basic info on ceremonies at http://www.girlscouts.org/program/basics/traditions/ceremonies/ . You can also sign up for the 90 minute workshop on Basic GS Ceremonies held at the March 24 Training Blitz.  Or borrow the ceremonies books from our SU library.

New 100th Anniversary Membership Star Disc

There is a commemorative disc that you can give your girls to put behind their membership star and colored disc this year. It is a great way to remember being a scout during the Girl Scout 100th Anniversary year. If you have extra colored discs from a scout level that you don’t need, consider donating them to the R3 table to share with other leaders.

Cosmic Bowling 2012

Cosmic bowling was a hit!  Ambassadors, Seniors, and older Cadettes and Juliettes from 4 of our Association Service Units put on their black light t-shirts and enjoyed the music, pizza and cupcakes.   Ambassadors from troop 878 had bowled  two years ago at an Association Cosmic Bowling night and wanted to continue this event for other scouts because they had such a good time.  Registrations were slow to start, but fast and furious the week prior to March 10.  Sorry, troops calling on the day of the event were turned away, but we had exceeded our limit and filled 9 lanes with 54 bowlers.

Girls seemed to enjoy selecting the music and choosing their door prizes even more than rolling the ball down the lane.  Thanks to everyone who supported the event by volunteering or donating a door prize.  $81 was donated to the Juliette Lowe World Friendship Fund.

Early Bird is Coming Up

The GSUSA membership year runs from October 1, 2012, through September 30, 2013. The typical “troop year” begins in September and usually wraps up in late May or early June.  For many families, the fall is chaotic as they adjust to the new school year.  So, GSCNC provides the opportunity for girls and adults to register for the next Girl Scout year  before troops take the summer “off”.

Why Early Bird?

Early-Bird registrants will receive a 100th commemorative patch or rocker when they register for the 2012-2013 year.

When a Troop Early Birds 50% of their "active" girls no later than June 29, 2012 they will receive a $20.00 GSCNC Shop coupon!

Easier for the girl and parents to decide on which school/extra curricular activities to participate in when they are already registered
Allows the Leader (s) better planning for  the fall events and allows time to find volunteers to take key positions within the Troop.
You get bumped up to the beginning of the line if you are on a waiting list for a new troop in the fall.
Girls are set for initial fall Council, SU, and troop activities
Girls will have priority for fall events when they are registered early.
It is easier to add more girls to your troop when the troop is already registered
Specific details will be given at the April Service Unit Meeting!!

Recognition Event - May 15, 2012

It is wonderful to be able to share notes of thanks and let our volunteers know how much they are appreciated.  But your service unit team can’t do that on our own.  We don’t know about the nice thing someone has done to help you unless you tell us!  Please consider expressing your appreciation or nominating a volunteer for an award.

Has another troop leader shared meeting space, given a hand, or coordinated her girls to help your troop?  Say thanks!  Has a team member found supplies for you, encouraged your troop parents to get involved, or steered you through a maze of papers to help you or your troop accomplish something?  Say thanks!
Write an informal thank you message and submit it to Kristy Carrithers, Recognitions chair by April 10 at Recognitions@girlscoutsnorthreston.org  The messages will be shared at the April Service Unit meeting.  Handwritten notes are also welcome, and can be sent to 1582 Brass Lantern Way, Reston, VA 20194.

Is there a volunteer that regularly presents solutions, offers help, and provides the resources needed?  Is there a leader that you see consistently provides excellent Girl Scout program, communicates the Girl Scout mission and empowers girls to grow in leadership, courage, confidence and character?
Nominate them for an award by March 15.  Descriptions, qualifications and nomination forms for the awards are accessible on the GSCNC.org website.  A short description follows in this article.  Contact Kristy Carrithers at Recognitions@girlscoutsnorthreston.org if you want to nominate someone.  Her home phone is 703-787-8043.

Please don’t delay if you want to honor another volunteer.  We have a bit of flexibility with the March 15 deadline, but not much.

LONGEVITY
Longevity pins are another form of recognition awarded for years in Scouting.  If your combined years in scouting are 5, 10, 15, etc. or beyond, then we would be honored to award you a longevity pin.  To receive a pin, you must submit a form R671 and an Adult Record of Service form, R670.  These should be submitted to Kavita Imarti by April 10.  They can be completed on-line and emailed to Recognitions@girlscoutsnorthreston.org .  Or sent to Kavita Imarti, 1649 Fieldthorn Drive, Reston, VA 20194.

Link to the Recognitions pages on the GSCNC.org website:  http://www.gscnc.org/adult_recognition.html
The pink, Adult Recognition Handbook has detailed information about each council or GSUSA award.

Now is the time of year when we recognize the hard work of our volunteers.  Please consider recognizing those who have given their time and talent to support you and the girl scouts you lead.  We can process the following formal awards in time for our May recognitions event:

Outstanding Leader:  This leader should have at least two years of experience as a leader, provide a program of activities that helps develop Scouts’ potential and communicates well with members of the troop and their families.
Outstanding Volunteer:  This person doesn’t need to a be a Scout leader, but is someone whose outstanding service for at least two years has been beyond the expectations of their position and benefits the troop, service unit or association.
Daisy Award:  This service unit award recognizes a first or second-year troop leader that has done an exceptional job for her girls.
Shining Star Award:  This service unit award is for a service unit team member who has done an exceptional job for at least two years.
Jan Verhage Spirit of Leadership Award:  In honor of our GS Council’s former Executive Director, this award recognizes those who exemplify Jan’s outstanding courage, confidence and character in leadership.  For troop leaders whose commitment allowed many girls to reach their full potential through Girl Scout principals and tradition.  (Leader for at least 5 years.)

Keep in mind these additional awards which require more time and council review in order to be presented to a recipient.  It is not too early to nominate a volunteer you think deserving this honor.
Appreciation Pin:  Honors outstanding service performed by the candidate for at least three years which benefits at least one service unit or association.
Honor Pin:  Recognizes outstanding service performed by the candidate for at least four years which benefits at least two service units or associations.
Nation’s Capital Pin:  Recognizes dedication and significant service for at least three years in support of outstanding programs for girls within the GSCNC.

We have reviewed our service unit records and would like to keep them up to date.  Listed is the date of the most recent record of service (R670) we have on file for the volunteers in our Service unit.  Our apologies if you have submitted the form and we misplaced it.  Please resubmit the form.  You can access the R670 under Forms on the GSCNC website.
Three ways to submit:
1.       Email the completed form to dcarrithers@earthlink.net
2.       Bring the completed form to the Service Unit meeting on Monday, March 19
3.       Fill out a blank form at the Service unit meeting on Monday, March 19
