Recognition Event - May 15, 2012

It is wonderful to be able to share notes of thanks and let our volunteers know how much they are appreciated.  But your service unit team can’t do that on our own.  We don’t know about the nice thing someone has done to help you unless you tell us!  Please consider expressing your appreciation or nominating a volunteer for an award.

Has another troop leader shared meeting space, given a hand, or coordinated her girls to help your troop?  Say thanks!  Has a team member found supplies for you, encouraged your troop parents to get involved, or steered you through a maze of papers to help you or your troop accomplish something?  Say thanks!
Write an informal thank you message and submit it to Kristy Carrithers, Recognitions chair by April 10 at Recognitions@girlscoutsnorthreston.org  The messages will be shared at the April Service Unit meeting.  Handwritten notes are also welcome, and can be sent to 1582 Brass Lantern Way, Reston, VA 20194.

Is there a volunteer that regularly presents solutions, offers help, and provides the resources needed?  Is there a leader that you see consistently provides excellent Girl Scout program, communicates the Girl Scout mission and empowers girls to grow in leadership, courage, confidence and character?
Nominate them for an award by March 15.  Descriptions, qualifications and nomination forms for the awards are accessible on the GSCNC.org website.  A short description follows in this article.  Contact Kristy Carrithers at Recognitions@girlscoutsnorthreston.org if you want to nominate someone.  Her home phone is 703-787-8043.

Please don’t delay if you want to honor another volunteer.  We have a bit of flexibility with the March 15 deadline, but not much.

LONGEVITY
Longevity pins are another form of recognition awarded for years in Scouting.  If your combined years in scouting are 5, 10, 15, etc. or beyond, then we would be honored to award you a longevity pin.  To receive a pin, you must submit a form R671 and an Adult Record of Service form, R670.  These should be submitted to Kavita Imarti by April 10.  They can be completed on-line and emailed to Recognitions@girlscoutsnorthreston.org .  Or sent to Kavita Imarti, 1649 Fieldthorn Drive, Reston, VA 20194.

The pink, Adult Recognition Handbook has detailed information about each council or GSUSA award.

Now is the time of year when we recognize the hard work of our volunteers.  Please consider recognizing those who have given their time and talent to support you and the girl scouts you lead.  We can process the following formal awards in time for our May recognitions event:

Outstanding Leader:  This leader should have at least two years of experience as a leader, provide a program of activities that helps develop Scouts’ potential and communicates well with members of the troop and their families.
Outstanding Volunteer:  This person doesn’t need to a be a Scout leader, but is someone whose outstanding service for at least two years has been beyond the expectations of their position and benefits the troop, service unit or association.
Daisy Award:  This service unit award recognizes a first or second-year troop leader that has done an exceptional job for her girls.
Shining Star Award:  This service unit award is for a service unit team member who has done an exceptional job for at least two years.
Jan Verhage Spirit of Leadership Award:  In honor of our GS Council’s former Executive Director, this award recognizes those who exemplify Jan’s outstanding courage, confidence and character in leadership.  For troop leaders whose commitment allowed many girls to reach their full potential through Girl Scout principals and tradition.  (Leader for at least 5 years.)

Keep in mind these additional awards which require more time and council review in order to be presented to a recipient.  It is not too early to nominate a volunteer you think deserving this honor.
Appreciation Pin:  Honors outstanding service performed by the candidate for at least three years which benefits at least one service unit or association.
Honor Pin:  Recognizes outstanding service performed by the candidate for at least four years which benefits at least two service units or associations.
Nation’s Capital Pin:  Recognizes dedication and significant service for at least three years in support of outstanding programs for girls within the GSCNC.

We have reviewed our service unit records and would like to keep them up to date.  Listed is the date of the most recent record of service (R670) we have on file for the volunteers in our Service unit.  Our apologies if you have submitted the form and we misplaced it.  Please resubmit the form.  You can access the R670 under Forms on the GSCNC website.
Three ways to submit:
1.       Email the completed form to dcarrithers@earthlink.net
2.       Bring the completed form to the Service Unit meeting on Monday, March 19
